The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs educates students for an expanded comprehensive nurse practitioner role in clinical practice, leadership, education, policy and consultation.  D’Youville College offers a two-year DNP program which requires a master’s degree to apply. Some universities (i.e. University at Buffalo) also offer DNP programs for students with a bachelor’s degree, but it may take three to seven years to complete.

 The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs are also available for students who want to contribute to knowledge development, theory generation and hypothesis testing to improve nursing practice outcomes and health care as nurse scientists and academicians. For example, University at Buffalo offers PhD program in nursing, and Rochester University offers PhD program in health practice research, and MS-PhD accelerated and combined programs.

传统博士学位侧重学术研究，更加适合想要在作为科学研究者在护理学领域的知识和理论中做出创新研究的学生。纽约州立大学布法罗分校提供本科和硕士毕业生都可以申请的护理学博士专业（本科生的学习时间比硕士毕业生长），罗彻斯特大学有健康实践研究专业的博士，也有针对护理学本科毕业生设置的五年硕博连读的项目。
